How we got involved with chips in the first place:
When we moved to Las
Vegas back in 1985 we started saving a $1 chip or $1 token from
each casino we visited. Like many collectors we thought we were
the only ones in the world to save these.
While our friends vacationed in Hawaii or San Diego we spent
our vacation in little Nevada towns like Ely, Wendover and
Winnemucca. In 1995 I took a class on the Internet and thought
it would be a neat place to display my collection.
About that time I stumbled onto the "organized part" of the chip collecting
hobby and began corresponding on the CompuServe chip forum.
Since I lived in Vegas other forum members began asking me
to pick up chips for them. With the combination of the
Internet class and this group of forum members needing
chips, Cheques in the Mail, Inc. was born. I never in my
wildest thoughts would have believed that someday I'd be
able to quit my job, Debbie quit hers and we'd be able to
enjoy our hobby on a full time basis. We're definitely
not getting rich selling chips but we are able to work
from home, call our own shots and raise our daughter
together.

How we got involved with customized chips:
Back in '98 our daughter was about to be born. We were in a stationary
store pondering over which birth announcement we should purchase and send
out to our family and friends. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks! What
if we had a casino chip made to annouce her birth? After all, selling
casino chips was our livlihood so it seemed like the perfect announcement.
There are three major companies that manufacture chips so I chose
one and presented my idea to the president. He loved it and gave me
a nice price break on the artwork, production costs and most importantly
allowed me to order a smaller quantity than a typical casino order.
We made 402 of them. Why 402 you ask? Our daughter Alexi was born
on April 2nd (04/02). We gave them out to just about everyone we could
think of including 200 of our best chip collector customers.
They went over great! In fact many people asked if we could have a
chip made for them too. I went back to the company and asked if I could
keep the ball rolling and make chips for our friends and customers.
They agreed.
Over the next three years from word of mouth with absolutely no advertising
we made chips for people that ranged from business card chips, to retirement
party chips to wedding announcements. Everyone that had a chip made
had great results to report.
Hmmm... maybe there's something to this customized casino chip idea
we thought...
Our first commercial custom chip venture went up in November of 2001,
a site called WeddingChips.com. We targeted couples getting married in Las Vegas to
give the chips out as wedding favors. There are 125,000 weddings in
Las Vegas each year and the city has been dubbed the "Wedding Capitol
of the World". With Vegas also being the "Gaming Capital of the World"
we believed our chips made the "Perfect Las Vegas Wedding Favor".
It wasn't long before these customized wedding chips sales surpassed
the collectible casino chips we were selling on the secondary market
to chip collectors. Not only that, we felt blessed that we were providing
a product that was just so appreciated by the bridal couples and their
guests. Our customers praised both our product and the way that we treated
them.
In September of 2003 we noticed that poker was really starting to take off. It was on television all the time and we realized that casino chips that commemorated poker players on them were starting to sell much better than they had in the past. At the urging of a friend we launched HomePokerChips.com with four stock artworks and a hope that we'd sell a set or two. Right out of the gate the results were staggering. In fact we got so busy that we needed to close the wedding chip part of our business down. I even needed to take on a partner to handle the day to day business of our lasvegas-chips.com site which offered collectible chips.
